The official launch of an Australian National Maritime Museum exhibition was held behind the Visitor Information Centre, on Wednesday.
‘Container – the box that changed the world’ is a display of six brightly coloured shipping containers and aims to give people of all ages, a glimpse into the history and importance of the simple shipping container.
The exhibition demonstrates how shipping containers have had an impact on the way we transport goods and how our lives are dependent on the success of shipping.
It’s hoped, the interactive display will help teach the local community about shipping, ports, cargo, package containerisation and the ocean.
Narrabri Shire Council Mayor Cathy Redding opened the exhibition with words about how vital shipping containers are to our local community.
“Within the Narrabri Shire we are primary producers of a number of agricultural commodities including cereals, pulses and cotton,” said Cr Redding.
“Sixty percent of exported cereals and pulses are containerised with cotton being 100 per cent containerised.
“The Narrabri Shire produces world class exports including approximately 655,000 tonnes of agricultural products and imports, approximately 48 thousand tonnes of product.”
Head of interpretation and design at the Australian National Maritime Museum Alexandra Gaffikin spoke at the launch and talked about the Maritime Museum’s goals.
“At the Australian National Maritime Museum our mission is to share the story of Australia’s maritime heritage across the country.
“So we are delighted that one of our great exhibitions can come to Narrabri,” said Ms Gaffikin.
