May is over and winter has finally come, dropping daytime temperatures to the mid teens, while overnight temps have been getting down to freezing, cooling our local water way and making the fishing very slow.
The Namoi River has been fishing very slowly over the past month with few reports of fish being caught, especially on lures.
Bait fishing has slightly fared better with some smaller Murray Cod and legal sized Yellowbelly being caught mostly on shrimps and smaller yabbies.
During the month there was an algae outbreak around Narrabri caused by higher daytime temps in conjunction with low water levels creating ideal conditions for algae to grow.
The surface of the river turned green.
However it didn’t last too long with some cool conditions stopping any further growth and helped break up the outbreak.
At this time of year with the onset of cooler conditions it’s time to start slowing down your lure presentations with hard-bodied lures being a great option as well as upsizing lures also as the native fish are lethargic and may need several presentations to get the bite.
