The Narrabri Basketball Association’s junior basketball has continued to grow, with a significant jump of players in the first of the two 2019 seasons.
The season wrapped up last week with the final round of games for the season ahead of the senior grand finals.
Narrabri Basketball Association treasurer Trish Lawty, who plays a major role in the running of the junior program, said that the number of players almost doubled compared to that of last year’s.
“The season was a success, we went from 33 players last season to 60 this season,” Lawty told The Courier.
Lawty said that the association’s goal now was to host a competition in the oldest of the three age groups for the next season which will start in early August.
“We’ve been going for a few years,” she said.
“It’s really just been whoever turns up on the night we put into teams.
“This next comp in that older age group we are going to have four set teams so that will give them a bit more commitment to a team, they’ll be more motivated.
“We will have set times.
“The committee will sort the players into teams and we will buy shirts for the teams.
“It’s been good up until now because they’ve got to play with and against different players each week.
“I think this will encourage the next age group of kids.
“We haven’t been able to class each group into set ages, some cross over, some play up in the older group, but some older ones play down due to grading.
“But it’s been basically sevens to eights for the littlest group, then nines to 11s for the middle one and then roughly 12s to 14s for the oldest group.
“We just haven’t had quite enough (for a competition in the oldest group) but I think that will come.”
