The Narrabri Rugby Club’s first grade side continued its impressive 2019 Central North Rugby Union season form on Saturday when it defeated a strong Gunnedah outfit 31-12 at Dangar Park.

The Blue Boars were able to run over the top of the Red Devils in the round 11 clash to push into third place on the ladder, with only Walcha (first) and Moree (second) now above Narrabri.

The victory saw Narrabri overtake Gunnedah and Pirates which entered round 11 in third and fourth spot respectively.

The victory came just one week after the Blue Boars were able to score a huge away win against league leaders Walcha.

At Dangar Park on Saturday the home side had four individual try-scorers in the match which was played in front of a large crowd on the Narrabri Rugby Club’s ladies’ day.

Matt McDonnell, Sam Knight, Jydon Hill and Jake Packer all scored for Narrabri in its 19-point victory.

Michael Cain added to his terrific kicking record, slotting four conversions from four attempts and kicking an individual penalty goal.

Cain kicked that penalty goal in the first half, which combined with his two conversions and tries to Hill and Knight saw Narrabri take a 17-0 lead into the break.

In the second stanza Narrabri’s McDonnell and Packer crossed for their tries which Cain converted.

The Blue Boars outscored Gunnedah 14-12 in that half with Red Devils winger Brad Swain scoring all of his side’s points.

Blue Boars first grade coach Dylan Duncan told The Courier the win showed the strength of the side.

“We really needed to win two out of those top three games we played, and we were unlucky not to have all three,” Duncan said.

“I thought we played really well.

“There was a 10-minute period where we got excited and wanted a bonus point and dropped the ball, but despite that I was happy with the result.

“We’ve been working a lot on our discipline at training and it has been really showing in games.”
