Joey Fowler is a country boy, born and bred in Narrabri, but this weekend the 14-year-old junior rugby gun will pull on a City jersey for the first time.
Joey, the son of Chris and Amanda Fowler, moved to Sydney earlier this year to attend St Joseph’s College, Hunters Hill, as a Year 9 student.
He achieved another milestone last month when he represented the Gordon region at the NSW Junior Rugby Union State Championships.
Joey’s team won the under-14 division after going through the tournament undefeated before beating quality outfit ACT Brumbies 22-17 in the grand final.
As a result of his individual performances and success at the tournament Joey was selected into the NSW City squad.
The former Narrabri Junior Rugby player now has a chance to gain selection into the team this weekend should he survive the final cut.
On Saturday he will take part in an intra-City trial match which will give selectors an idea of who they want in that team.
The following day the City squad will play a trial match against the already-selected Country team which includes Narrabri boys Don Watkins and Josh Briggs who are both former teammates of Joey’s.
The official City v Country game which could include all three of the 2018 Narrabri Junior Rugby under-14 premiership winners will be played in Newcastle on Saturday, August 3.
Joey’s preferred position is five-eight, but his versatility and positive attitude was highlighted when he played at inside centre and excelled in that position.
