Ten students graduated from a unique TAFE NSW course focussed on Aboriginal culture and knowledge systems at a special ceremony in Narrabri on Thursday night.

Families and friends of the graduates were in the audience to applaud the graduates, with guests including senior TAFE personnel and the mayor Cathy Redding.

The nationally recognised Diploma of Aboriginal Studies for Professional and Community Practice equips students with cultural literacy and competency and the skills needed to apply learning in the workplace, community or through further study.

Helen Wenner travelled from Wee Waa to attend the course at TAFE Narrabri with a view to learning new skills to apply to her role as the Aboriginal Engagement Coordinator at Wee Waa High School.

“It has been my dream for over ten years now to complete a diploma in Aboriginal studies,” Ms Wenner said.

“I’ve learnt so much about the protocol around Aboriginal culture, significant history and struggles, my identity and where I belong.

“I plan on passing my knowledge and skills on to students and my grandkids.

“I believe they can take our culture and pass it on for many years to come.”
