COVID-19 restrictions and concert cancellations have seen many artists, from Lady Gaga to Keith Urban, turn their living rooms into music studios and perform hit tunes from home while broadcasting online.

Thanks to a grant from Arts North West, Baan Baa’s Sarah Leete now has the opportunity to perform virtually too. Sarah has acquired live stream equipment and will perform via Facebook on Monday, June 8.

“I’m stoked, it means a lot to have this support to perform in a professional manner,” said Sarah.

“You can be the best singer in the world but if you don’t have good quality gear – you’re not going to sound very good.”

Sarah’s beautiful voice has been described as ‘classic, comforting and country’ and the local artist has spent COVID-19 lockdown writing a swag of new songs.

“It has been good to go back to where it all started – just the guitar and me in my bedroom writing and singing. I’ve got a nice, little handful of songs that I’m looking to take to the studio.”

Like many in the entertainment industry, Sarah has had to put her music plans on pause.

“It has been devastating, absolutely devastating for the industry.

“Not just regarding the loss of work but also the loss of opportunity.

“It’s going to take the pub scene a long time to recover and whether they put music back on straight away, is a whole other thing too.”

There’s no doubt music soothes the soul and entertainment is something people have craved during this tough time.

Artists might have to be innovative about the way they deliver their craft but Sarah is grateful to have the chance to share her talent online.

“COVID has shined a light on the fact that music connects us and I really enjoy song writing and I like that I can try and contribute to the bigger picture.”
