A surprise book launch was held at Whiddon – Jessie Hunt recently.

Resident poet and artist Dick Houguet was presented with a beautiful book full of his own creative work.

The name of the book is ‘A collection of poems and drawings’ by Dick Houguet.

Whiddon Leisure officer Leanne Scott said she saw a need for Mr Houguet’s extensive collection of poetry and drawings to be honoured and appreciated in one place.

“I was so surprised when I was presented with this book,” said Mr Houguet

“I had no idea that Leanne, the leisure officer, was putting this together in secret.

“I’m so grateful that the team at Whiddon Narrabri – Jessie Hunt did this for me,” said Mr Houguet.

Mr Houguet’s poems and drawings are inspired by the ‘old days and life experiences’ with a touch of fun and humour.

Whiddon organised the surprise book binding for Mr Houguet’s ‘Best Week’.

‘Best Week’ is a Whiddon initiative that helps aged-care residents achieve a goal or dream that might seem out of reach.

Whiddon said its model of care, also known as ‘MyLife’ is about putting relationships ‘at the heart of great care’.

And Mr Houguet’s book launch is a perfect example of this in practice.

Whiddon care staff aim to build meaningful relationships with residents which ultimately leads to better outcomes for everyone.

When care staff learn more about the residents’ unique life experiences, or see how they spend their days then they are able to work on delivering or doing things that matter most to residents.

Leanne knows and understands Mr Houguet’s interests and passions, and she felt producing a book of his wonderful work was a good way to create a personalised and memorable experience for him.
