The major makeover of Maitland Street is entering its final phase.

The installation of a median strip, new street lights and upgrading of the water mains under Maitland Street has been carried out and it is time for new asphalt.

A tender for the re-sealing of the three CBD blocks was to be released by the shire council this week and expected to be awarded to a successful contractor in August.

“Work is expected to start immediately after,” said Council’s director infrastructure delivery, Darren Raeck.

Road construction is expected to take approximately six months to complete due to the complexity of the work and volume of soil that needs to be removed and replaced, a council spokesperson said.

“The construction process is being designed to limit disruption to CBD businesses with accessibility to the main street being maintained.

“No works will be undertaken during the Christmas shopping period to allow shoppers to have unhindered access to the CBD.”

Major works have preceded the final stage of the main street makeover.

“Extensive subgrade and pavement investigations and soil testing were undertaken while the water main replacement was completed in the CBD earlier this year to ensure pavement designs were fit for purpose,” council said.

Darren Raeck, who has overseen the process, said he understood the community was keen to see the job completed.

“While the road surface was being excavated for the installation of new water mains, we took the opportunity to conduct a thorough assessment on the road subgrade and base layers which highlighted variations along the length of the street.

“This information was key to ensuring designs created reflected accurately the requirements needed to deliver a long-lasting finish to meet the standards of the community.”
