Narrabri Shire Council awards contract for a new main street

Narrabri will soon have a long awaited new main street.

Narrabri Shire Council has awarded a contract to Daracon Group Pty Ltd for asphalting Maitland Street CBD from Lloyd Street to Bowen Street.

Works will involve full depth asphalt pavement layers, roundabout works, repaving of affected pedestrian areas, markings for carparks, pedestrian crossing and hydrants.

Road construction for the project is expected to take approximately six months to complete due to the complexity of the work and volume of soil that needs to be removed and replaced.

The construction process is being designed to limit disruption to CBD businesses with accessibility to the main street being maintained, the council said.

No works will be undertaken during the Christmas shopping period to allow shoppers to have unhindered access to the CBD.”

The implementation of the Narrabri CBD Parking Plan that was adopted by Council in 2017 will also be undertaken as part of the tender works.

Work will be completed one side of the street at a time with accessibility for pedestrians to still gain access to businesses.

“Council appreciates the community’s patience with this large and complex project and is acutely aware of the time it has taken to reach this point,” Council’s general manager, Mr Stewart Todd said.

“Council has been through a thorough investigation and strategically replaced other assets within Maitland Street to reach this point. Council has completed as much due diligence as we can to ensure the correct design and materials are used to create a safe and long-lasting finish to the road surface that the community deserves.”

“The Council used the Maitland Street water main replacement project to gain a better understanding of the under-road condition and soil composition of the area to add additional valuable information to the detailed assessment of the scope of works for the Maitland Street pavement replacement.

“Council completely understands the community’s eagerness to have the pavement surface complete after recent rain, which has highlighted the issues we were contending with in determining the most appropriate design,” added Mr Todd.

Council will provide updates as the project progresses.
