The cotton industry in Narrabri Shire will receive a jobs boost following Cotton Seed Distributors’ decision to recruit for new roles at its Wee Waa seed production facilities.

CSD has created new positions to support the company’s five-year strategic plan.

It ties in with the company’s vision of ‘growing the Australian cotton crop through innovative solutions beyond seed’.

The company’s managing director Peter Graham was enthusiastic about the future of the nation’s cotton industry.

“Despite recent environmental and social challenges, we foresee a strong future for the Australian cotton industry with new irrigation and dryland areas opening up every season,” Mr Graham said.

“As Australia’s sole supplier of cotton planting seed, CSD is committed to ensuring the future of our industry, and investing in quality staff is part of our strategy to support and drive the industry forward.”

The company has created work for an apprentice electrician, operations assistants, a laboratory assistant and a laboratory technical officer.

Mr Graham said the company had a strong focus on succession planning, to ensure that CSD was ready for the challenges of the future.

“This allows us to identify future leaders within the organisation, creating opportunities for staff to upskill and progress within their careers at CSD,” he said.

“It also identifies the capabilities required to lead the company for the years to come.”

CSD embarked on a $92 million infrastructure redevelopment project in 2017 – the largest ever non-mining development in the Narrabri Shire.

Officially opened in 2018, the new facilities now have the capacity to supply the Australian cotton industry with cotton planting seed for up to one million hectares of dryland and irrigated cotton in any one season.

Since then, the company has purchased, fitted and commissioned innovative molecular testing platforms in the new Quality and Research Centre, ensuring CSD is well positioned with cutting edge technology.

Recently, the CSD board of directors approved the second stage of the redevelopment project – a further $15.7 million to upgrade and modernise the equipment and processes in the nursery plant.

CSD will engage a number of contractors during the installation and commissioning phase of this project, bringing further benefit to the local economy.

Stage two is expected to be completed and operational by the end of 2021.

“Despite a prolonged drought, fluctuating global demand for cotton and now a global pandemic, CSD has been able to retain our workforce, and now we’re looking to grow our talent for the future,” Mr Graham said.

“We’re proud to be offering solid career opportunities within our local communities of Narrabri and Wee Waa.”

The company, which has operations in Wee Waa and Dalby, Queensland, has a primary objective to deliver locally adapted, high yielding and high quality cotton varieties supported by strong extension activities to help growers extract the best value from these varieties.

Full profiles on the positions being offered by CSD are available online here.

Applications should be emailed to CSD’s human resources manager, David Coleman ([email protected]) by close of business on Friday, November 20, 2020.
