Bunnings has confirmed that its proposed Narrabri project is on track.

The proposal in 2018 (later withdrawn) to develop a Bunnings store in Narrabri aroused much community discussion with expressions of support alongside concerns for the store’s potential impact on existing outlets. The new development approval for the project on the Narrabri Commercial Estate was passed by Narrabri Shire Council in December last year.

“We are currently reviewing the conditions of the development approval and preparing to go to tender,” Bunnings area manager, John Newell, said in a statement.

“We don’t have a timeframe for construction at this stage, but will update the community when we can.”

Mr Newell said Bunnings was pleased to have received approval for a smaller format store in Narrabri.

“The new store represents an investment of $15 million and will be located at the corner of Saleyards Lane and the Newell Highway,” Mr Newell said.

“It will span over 5000 square metres and feature a main retail area, outdoor nursery, timber and building materials area, as well as parking for over 80 cars.

“It is estimated the store will create approximately 45 team member jobs and an additional 45 jobs during construction.

“We look forward to bringing a wide range of home and lifestyle products to the Narrabri community”.

At the December meeting of council, councillor Cameron Staines moved that council grant consent for the development. The move was seconded by Cr Ron Campey.

Cr Staines told the meeteing other areas where Bunnings had set-up stores on the outskirts of town had seen growth around the stores and developed a precinct, of sorts.

“I think this will be a great investment for the town going forward,” he said.

“It will bring other businesses to Narrabri, possibly the likes of Harvey Norman and Aldi.”

As part of the development approval, Bunnings will enter into a voluntary planning agreement to pay a contribution towards upgrades to the intersection of Newell Highway and Saleyard Lane to accommodate an increase in traffic as a result of the store.

While the store will have prominent exposure with its frontage on the Newell Highway, access will predominantly take place from Saleyard Lane.

Access from Saleyard Lane will comprise of a left in only driveway for access to loading docks as well as a full movement driveway.

Caroline Way will be used as an access point to the loading dock with an egress driveway.
