The sportiest town in Australia’s newest Australian champion is 12-year-old speedway racer Wyatt Lawler.

Narrabri young gun Wyatt, the son of Scott and Jamie Lawler, competed at his first national championships event on Good Friday when he lined up in the 2020-21 RSA Junior Sedans Australian Titles at Gilgandra Speedway.

There were 29 junior drivers in action which was made up of eight New Stars drivers (aged 10-13-years-old) and 21 All Stars drivers (aged 14-17-years-old).

Wyatt placed third on track in the 25-lap feature race, which included both All Star and New Star drivers, to secure a podium finish. That result also saw him finish first in the New Stars division as he claimed his maiden national title.

Earlier in the night, Wyatt started the event in style with a heat one win. He started the first of three 10-lap heats in fourth position and eventually made his way to the front before claiming first place.

Wyatt then started the second heat in ninth position and placed sixth.

Heat three saw Wyatt take off from second position and establish an early lead which he would hold onto until the final lap. During that last lap, the Narrabri driver and second-placed Tyler Burnham got caught up on turns three and four with lapped cars which allowed Tyler to overtake Wyatt and race home to first place. The Narrabri boy was then forced to settle for second.

Next up was Wyatt’s debut Australian title feature race which saw 25 drivers take to the track. The Narrabri boy started that feature in third position as a result of the points he accumulated in the three heats.

He showed composure and maturity beyond his years to claim third place on track which also saw him crowned the 2020-21 RSA Junior Sedans New Star champion.

Jaiden Healey won the feature race to be crowned All Stars champion while Ryley Smith placed second. Second in New Stars was Levi Payne and third was Benji Gordon.

The Narrabri speedway sensation is now eyeing off another major title next month. Wyatt will compete for the 2020-21 RSA Junior Sedans NSW State Title which will be hosted at the Morris Park Speedway in Dubbo on Saturday, May 29.
