Narrabri boxer Brendan Davey is back in the ring and is eyeing off a switch to the professional side of the sport in 2022.

The 29-year-old made his highly-anticipated return at last month’s NSW King of the Ring tournament at Yagoona Sports Club in Sydney where he lost by a split decision against Parkes’ Thomas Pearce, who went on to win the tournament.

Davey was pleased with his performance in his first fight in more than three years before turning his attention to his rematch with Pearce in Gunnedah on Saturday night.

The Narrabri man was victorious in front of a sold out crowd at the ‘Bad Intentions 6’ event, which was organised by Black ‘n’ Blue Boxing Gunnedah’s

David ‘Spike’ Syphers in collaboration with Sydney’s Final Round Gym owner Hassan El-Achrafi.

Davey’s rematch against Pearce was at 91kg weight and was fought across three two-minute rounds. He won by split decision to extend his record to 10-4 after two of the three judges called the fight his way.

Davey, who currently trains in Gunnedah at the Black n Blue Boxing gym, told The Courier he was pleased to be back in the ring and that he aimed to turn pro in 2022.

“It was another close hard fight with him (Pearce), he’s a good fighter,” Davey said.

“It’s unreal to be back in the ring and I feel the best I have in years to be honest.

“It was a great feeling to get that win, I was pretty ecstatic.

“There was a lot of supporters there from Narrabri and I had the family there so it was good to fight in front of them, I was excited to fight locally.

“From now until the end of the year I’m trying to fight once every month but I’m not sure what’s up next just yet.

“I’m hoping to go pro at the end of the year so I need to get those fights in and get a bit more experience to make sure I’m good to go and jump across. I don’t have much time to waste anymore as I get older.”

Davey said that he would drop a weight division or two for his remaining fights this year.
