Gunnedah Speedway hosted its final race meeting of the 2020-21 season on Saturday at which two Narrabri drivers were victorious.

Winning the Senior Formula 500 division was Narrabri’s Scott Connole who claimed his first and third heats either side of a second-placed finish in his second heat.

There was no Senior Formula 500 feature race as Connole was the last man standing. A combination of driver incidents including crashes and mechanical failures during the heats meant that the other eight Senior Formula 500 drivers were unable line up for the feature race and Connole was declared the winner.

However, the victory did not exactly come about in Steven Bradbury-like fashion given Connole’s dominance earlier in the event.

Nine Senior Formula 500 drivers lined up for the first heat. Connole started from pole position and found some early form by racing to victory.

Eight drivers then started heat two in which the Narrabri competitor took off from the eighth position and finished second.

Connole then started from the four in a field of six in the third heat and raced to victory.

The Narrabri man now turns his attention to the NSW State Title which will be contested at Dubbo on Saturday, May 8.

Meanwhile, Wyatt Lawler was also a winner at the Gunnedah event as the 12-year-old Narrabri boy took out the junior New Stars division (drivers aged 10-13-years-old).

Wyatt raced to a clean sweep at the event, winning his three heats and the feature.

He started the first heat of the afternoon from third position, the second heat from fourth and the third heat from fifth and took out all three.

He then started the feature race from pole position and led the entire way.

There were seven New Stars racers in total in the first heat then six for the remaining three races.

Meanwhile, Boggabri duo Keith Urquhart and Jeremy Keynes were both among the placings on Saturday, finishing second and third respectively in the Fender Benders division.

An action-packed line-up was on offer at Saturday’s Gunnedah Speedway event, treating speedway-goers to a quality day of racing.

Gunnedah Speedway promoter Barry Towers said the season finale proved to be a great night of racing.

“This being the last race for the season, I would like to thank my track crew for the great work they do,”
he said.

“I thank the competitors and look forward to seeing you all return.”
