A Narrabri Shire Youth Council will be established following its endorsement by elected members.
Council resolved to form the youth group which would provide young people in the community with a platform to identify and advocate on priorities important to them.
It would also provide Narrabri Shire Council with valuable information on areas of importance for youth.
Mayor Ron Campbell strongly supports the council initiative that will create a direct link with the youth of the shire.
“The Narrabri Shire Youth Council will provide opportunities for our young people to influence youth focused programs and projects within the shire,” Cr Campbell said.
“Individual youth council members will also receive professional and leadership development opportunities as a member of the council.
“This will be a wonderful opportunity for young people across the shire to be a part of the youth council and to share their ideas about the provision of youth services in the community and play an active role in the creation, revision and implementation of council’s youth strategy.
“As outlined in council’s Community Strategic Plan, one of the strategies is to ensure the youth of the shire are engaged and supported through the provision of adequate programs – this initiative is another great example of council providing our young people opportunities here within our shire.”
General manager Stewart Todd is pleased council has reached the point to be able to call for youth council members.
“This is a project we have been working on in the background for quite a while, researching and investigating other youth council models so we get the formula right for our shire,” Mr Todd said.
“I am excited and really looking forward to working with the youth mayor and deputy mayor once appointed, to draft and then implement a shire-wide youth strategy.”
The youth council will consist of a maximum of 10 volunteer members aged between 14-years-old and 24-years-old.
The council will have a youth mayor and deputy mayor with council staff providing mentorship to youth council members at all meetings.
Council will call for nominations in early June 2021 for membership of the Narrabri Shire Youth Council.
