Local employment opportunities are the lifeblood of rural towns like Narrabri.

The team at WTC understand that, so they’ve recently launched new positions to train and hire local apprentice plant operators.

The successful applicants will be taught to work with various equipment, including scrapers, excavators, water carts, graders, skid steers, rollers and more.

These full-time positions are calling for young people with a good attitude, strong initiative and the ability to work as part of a team, with a current driver’s licence and a Year 10 (or equivalent) education.

Successful applicants will undertake training in basic reading of plans and understanding design, concreting, plant operation, general labouring and planning.

Managing director, Will Childs, said it’s a great opportunity for locals who don’t have any background in this kind of work but are interested in the construction industry.

“We’re not asking for any prior experience, we’ll teach you everything you need to know – this is a great opportunity to break into the industry,” he said.

“And these apprentices will be helping with a whole range of jobs at WTC, including road building, bulk earthworks, concrete works,

drainage, mining infrastructure and more, so you’ll have the chance to try it all.

“Not only will you gain an understanding of how the industry operates, but the apprentice role supports you as you study a Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations.”

Mr Childs hopes this focus on local jobs will result in sustained investment in the Narrabri Shire.

“We’ve created this position to invest in local upskilling, including formal training in the form of a Certificate III, so these people can get the qualifications they need to continue progressing in their career while remaining in the Narrabri Shire.”

Katrina Panter, WTC’s health, safety and training manager, agreed with Mr Childs’ emphasis on local employment.

“We’re passionate about investing in the area, which is why we’ve created these apprentice positions,” she said.

“As our team grows, we want to remain community-minded and locally-focused.”

“Providing young people with such on-the-job training opportunities can make a lasting impact on tight-knit communities like ours.”

Ms Panter said the opportunity will also allow the WTC team to engage in mentoring at work, an area she says is important.

“These young people will start their career journey with us, so we want to make sure they’re as well-trained and informed as possible,” she said.

“And all we ask in return is that you’re eager to learn, highly motivated and an honest, hard worker.”

WTC is an advancing company with a fleet of modern, high-tech equipment and a team of skilled and motivated people to mentor you along the way.
