The Namoi Women’s Shed, an initiative with the Community College Northern Inland and Challenge Services, is up and running.
Women are coming together to work on projects and learn new skills in a variety of ways.
With the help of donations and a Joblink program, resources are being made available for women aged 15 and over to learn industrial skills in woodworking, welding, home and car maintenance, industrial and garden art, furniture restoration and learning to use power and hand tools amongst other things.
A large communal mosaic project is under development for all members to participate in creating a 2.4 metre Namoi Women’s Shed sign which will be proudly hung as a celebration of the opening.
The Namoi Women’s Shed also exists as a way for women to share, socialise and support other likeminded ladies, and members are welcome to bring their own projects to work on.
It also creates an opportunity to participate in community initiatives such as Pink Up Namoi – a McGrath Foundation project where members will be working on creating some wonderful placemats and table numbers for a proposed Pink Street dinner party.
Founder, Trish Dandridge says: “it is very inspiring to see the creativity, inspiration and enthusiasm of our members as we start to design and create this wonderful environment.”
“The Namoi Women’s Shed is very grateful to our local hardware store for its sponsorship and members will be able to take advantage of discounts through their memberships with them.
“The group is keen on recycling, and we will be working on creating potting and gardening benches and are chasing donations of old kitchen sinks!”
There is a membership fee of $25 per annum to help cover insurance costs and classes will be scheduled throughout the month to learn various skills.
“The Namoi Women’s Shed is an initiative which will offer women opportunities to learn practical new skills, create, socialise, network and enjoy each other’s company, Community College Northern Inland Coordinator Rachael Anderson said.
“It is an opportunity to provide a platform for skill development in trade and industry and is driven by a demand from local women to learn these skills and increase connection with others”.
