Boggabri Golf Club hosted its annual open day last Friday at which 28 keen and dedicated golfers teed off across two divisions in strong wind.

Boggabri golfers excelled on their home course, with Robert Collyer winning first division with 35 points from the runner-up which was fellow Boggabri golfer Les Gardoll.

Another Boggabri golfer claimed nearest to pin on the second hole. That was Milton Scaysbrook, who teamed up with clubmates Gardoll and Collyer to take out the Burke Shield on the day with a combined 92 points.

Werris Creek were runners-up in the race for the shield with 90 points.

The Central North Veterans Golf Association also hosted its 2021 championships event in conjunction with the Boggabri Open Day. Collyer was the nett winner of that event.

Collyer and Gardoll told The Courier that golf was an enjoyable game which can be played by everyone, young and old.

“Golf is a great game as you can start out as a young fellow and continue into your later years,” Collyer said.

“Us old fellows aren’t finished yet, I’m coming up to 25 years as a vet player,” Gardoll added.

Collyer and Gardoll also said that the Boggabri course was looking and playing the best it has done for many years, and that the numbers that are playing in Boggabri has doubled in the past year, even though COVID-19 has cut the travelling to competitions.

“There are plenty of opportunities to play in Boggabri as we play a nine-hole on Wednesday afternoon and 18 holes on Saturday afternoon,” Gardoll said.

“Both competitions are mixed games”.
