Narrabri Rugby Club’s women’s side continued its unbeaten start to the Central North Rugby Union campaign and ended another when it scored an impressive home ground victory at Dangar Park on Saturday.

The Blue Boars beat the Tamworth Pirates 50-21 in the round five clash to move into outright first position on the competition ladder.

The sides went into the contest on 20 points each, which the Blue Boars earned following three bonus-point wins and a bye in the first four rounds, compared to the Pirates’ two bonus-point wins and their pair of byes.

Narrabri had won its first three matches a combined 206-22. However, all those were 10s games, and Saturday’s round five match was played under the sevens format due to Tamworth only having eight players available.

The hosts adapted to that change in style as they led from the first minute until the last.

It took the Blue Boars 40 seconds to score after co-coaches Kate Brown and Peta Cox produced early offloads that helped their side march up the field before the hosts spread the ball through the hands from the centre to the left edge to April Smith, who broke the line on the outside of the Pirates winger and charged away to score. She then converted to make the score 7-0.

The match was played across four seven-minute quarters, and Narrabri went into the first break leading 19-0 after Shona McFarland and Natalia Smith crossed the stripe to score, and April Smith slotted her second goal on the bell.

Pirates went over for a converted try early in the second period to make the score 19-7, but Narrabri hit back a minute later as Tenayah Woodward made a break down the left edge and ran 50 metres to score the home side’s fourth try, which earned it a bonus point on the competition ladder.

Woodward slotted the conversion to make the score 26-7, but the Pirates had the final say in that quarter when they went over again and converted as the hosts went into the break with a 26-14 lead.

Narrabri outscored Pirates 12-0 in the third quarter as Natalia Smith scored at the start and the end of that period. April Smith converted the first of those, and Narrabri went into the final term leading 38-14.

The hosts came out firing in the last quarter as Bella Cruickshank made an early break down the right edge and passed inside to Brown as she was taken down just before the tryline. The in-form player-coach dived over to make the score 43-14.

The Blue Boars then hit 50 points for the fourth time in as many games this season with a minute left to play when captain Toni Gale broke through the defence and ran 30 metres to score off the back of a well-worked lineout play, and then added the extras herself.

Pirates eventually crossed for their third try of the day with 10 seconds left to make the final score 50-21.

The Blue Boars and the Pirates will meet again this Saturday when they go head-to-head in a 10s match at Chillingworth Oval in round six.

The clubs’ second and first grade sides will then play against each other for the first time in 2022.
