On Saturday, July 30, the Narrabri group of the NSW Embroiderers Guild celebrated World Embroidery Day with a very successful Friendship Day held in the Living Room at Narrabri High School.
World Embroidery Day has been celebrated worldwide since 2011 when a group of Swedish embroiderers initiated the day with a manifesto.
We began celebrating World Embroidery Day in 2016 and have celebrated it every year since, usually with a friendship day where we invite our friends who do not belong to the Embroiderers Guild.
What could be better than a day celebrating embroidery along with a shared morning tea, a catered lunch, a fun project to complete and plenty of chatter?
Under the guidance of our member Julie Roy, members and guests created a scissors fob using canvas work stitches on a plastic canvas base.
Most members and guests completed their scissors fob soon after lunch, and some ladies chose to make a bookmark instead.
Our friends travelled from as far away as the Northern Beaches of Sydney, and as usual, our long-distance members travelled in from Coolatai and Maules Creek for the get-together.
On Friday, September 2 and Saturday, September 3, the Narrabri Embroiderers Guild will be holding an exhibition of works completed during the past four years.
We usually hold an exhibition every two years, but we all know what happened in 2020 – consequently, instead of two years’ work to display, we hope to have twice as much.
One of the main parts of the display featured will be creations from our annual challenges.
The 2019 challenge, ‘Take a chance … think outside of the square’ was led by Vicki Jericho and led to the creation of a folded ‘book’.
During this challenge, various decisions, such as stitches to use, theme of the page, colour of threads to use or embellishments to add were decided by rolling Vicki’s multi-coloured dice.
Some wonderful books were created. In 2020, the challenge was ‘Canvas Embroidery Inspired by Mondrian’ coordinated by Julie Roy – again some wonderful creations emerged.
For the 2021 ‘Band Sampler Challenge’ led by Narrabri Embroiderers Guild convenor Ruth Palsson, participants explored two to four new stitches each month.
