The Narrabri High School Hall was full to capacity with parents and grandparents of Year 12 students marking the end of high school education on Friday, September 23.

The special assembly was attended by Years 9, 10 and 11 students, with Year 11 students officiating at the event, led by Jesse Weekes and Eliza Dampney.

Head drama teach Annie Manchee welcomed the attendees, and the proceedings started with Welcome to Country from Year 11 students Lakeyia Dennis and Jemma Harvey.

The National Anthem was performed by Narrabri High School music teachers, beautifully sung by Ashleigh Roberts accompanied by Katherine Crosara at the piano.

School principal Simon Warden addressed the students with an inspirational reference to one of Henry Ford’s famous quotes, spotted on a billboard mounted at Adelaide airport: “When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.”

Mr Warden used this metaphor to motivate students to strive to be and do their best throughout the years ahead and throughout their lives.

He said the impactful statement applies to all of us, young and old alike.

Mr Warden presented Martha Harvey and Poppy Smith with two special awards for outstanding contributions to Narrabri High School.

Martha’s award was presented for her achievements in CHS Rugby Union and All Schools Rugby Union.

Poppy’s award acknowledged her stunning Year 12 major textile project costume and its selection to form part of the 2022 NSW TEXStyle exhibition, an annual event in Sydney that showcases excellence in student textile design.

Year 12 adviser Erin Phillips spoke of the past year and praised the students for their dedication to Year 12 studies in preparation for the HSC examinations, which will take place next term.

The 2022 school captains and vice-captains were called to the stage, and incoming 2023 school captains were announced.

Outgoing school captains for 2022 are Martha Harvey and Noah Smith, with vice-captains May Krishna and Poppy Smith, and prefects Millicent Bruce, Riley Longworth, Logan Hewett and Sarah Stiller.
