Narrabri’s SIAHTO (Self Improvement And Help To Others) group met at the Narrabri RSL club on Tuesday, March 28.

Led by incoming president Cheryl Hennessy, the committee has a commemorative occasion to plan for 2023.

Well known for its annual ‘Woman of the Year’ awards which are staged later in the year, the club will be preparing for the celebration of its 50th birthday in July.

Interesting guest speakers are sought out throughout the year to deliver an address to the group.

Last week was no exception with the attendance of hemp pathologist Dr Karen Kirkby who is based at NSW Department of Primary Industries Australian Cotton Research Institute at Narrabri.

Dr Kirkby spoke about her past battle and survival with cancer and the formation of the Namoi Dragon boat venture in 2022, which Dr Kirkby was instrumental in initiating.

Dr Kirkby delivered an inspiring story of resilience and fellowship.

The boat has been making an appearance at Narrabri West Lake, along the Narrabri Creek and furthermore competing in race events across the country.

The club is building a remarkable reputation in the dragon boating scene.

Secretary Noeline Kiss said that SIAHTO is a unique organisation to Narrabri and has contributed thousands of dollars to local organisations over the years.

“Its aim has always been to provide fellowship, particularly to women who are new to Narrabri, so I feel the aims of Dr Karen Kirkby and that of SIAHTO are very similar.”
