The Narrabri Garden Club will be holding a special meeting with Robyn Bible from the Australian Geranium Society to be held at the Scout Hall in Wukawa Street on Wednesday, April 19.
A variety of geraniums and pelargoniums will be on display, and these varieties will be rare collections as Ms Bible is an avid collector and expert on the species. A selection of these plants will be for sale.
Most of the plants commonly called geraniums are actually pelargoniums, and while both species are members of the geranium (Geraniaceae) family, true geraniums are a very different group of over 300 species of perennials and shrubs that are at times evergreen and are widespread within the temperate zones of Australia.
If you have a geranium at home, you will notice that the regular, bisexual flowers have five separate sepals and five separate petals with either five, 10 or 15 stamens. Some varieties have been bred to have multiple layers of petals.
Ms Bible will be speaking on the varieties and giving local garden enthusiasts propagation, growing and fertilising tips.
The Australian Geranium Society Inc, located at Turramurra in Sydney, has been established for more than 60 years.
With the introduction of new varieties taking place throughout the years, an ongoing interest has been guaranteed, not only for the more experienced grower but also for the new gardener.
Easy to cultivate and with widespread use in gardens, rockeries and hanging pots, their impact on landscape gardening is quite evident today. All visitors are welcome to attend.
