Beautiful, sunny weather and wonderful local gardens all combined to make the Narrabri Garden Club gala open day a great success last Saturday, September 30.

Three gardens were open and all were individually beautiful.

The elegant town garden of Joan Burrell-Melbourne and John Melbourne, the bright pop of colour at Vanessa Ryan’s front garden which can be seen long before you get there and the fabulous school garden at St Francis Xavier’s School.

The school garden deserves special mention as it is a shining example of what can be achieved by a dedicated team who are teaching our next generation of gardeners the joy of growing their own food, taking pride in the care of the environment and sharing the friendship of gardening.

Beds brimming with vegetables, colourful nasturtiums spilling out on to the paths, the awesome scarecrow, well-maintained paths and very importantly, an impressive bank of compost bins.

Carol Demamiel, Gloria Campey, Annette Noy and Judy Wilson admiring the potted plants in Vanessa Ryan’s garden.

You know you are in for a treat when you approach Joan’s garden, a magnificent archway greets you covered in the prettiest pink roses, sweeping lawns, fragrant hedges, magnificent irises, and much more, makes this a wonderful garden to visit.

A delicious morning tea catered by the Garden Club greeted you on Joan’s cool shady front porch.

Finally the fabulous front garden of Vanessa and Chris Ryan with an explosion of colour from the massed planting of pigface right along the front verge then when you get closer you realise there is fabulous displays of flowers such as Californian poppy with its bright yellow citron flowers, roses, petunias all spilling out of purple and green pots along a shady front verandah.

Vanessa grows a lot of her plants from cuttings and has another amazing display in early May when her garden is filled with chrysanthemums.

We now look forward to the 2024 Open Garden Day.
