Two Narrabri athletes will compete at the Hart Sport State Little Athletics Championships in Sydney this weekend after they successfully progressed through the Little Athletics Zone and Regional Championships across the summer.

Under-9-years athlete Sofia Kneller will line up in three events, including the 60-metre hurdles, the 200 metres and the shot put, while Caitlin Evans will return to the state champs in the under-17 girls’ discus.

Narrabri Little Athletics was excited to have 10 athletes compete at Zone and Regional Championships events this season. Nyah McConnell competed in the under-8s, Sofia Kneller in the under-9s, Heidi Stuart and Tully Renaud in the under-10s, Mia McConnell in the under-11s, Ryan McConnell, Isabelle Leehy and Judah Stuart in the under-13s, and Caitlin Evans and Anna Stuart in the under-17s.

For most of Narrabri’s athletes, this was their first time competing at this level and their enthusiasm and sportsmanship were to be commended.

All of the athletes achieved top-four performances in their chosen events in the pouring rain at Zone Champs in Tamworth in November 2023. This enabled them to compete, again in Tamworth, at the Regional Champs in February, where they got the chance to line up against athletes from across the Mid Coast, Northern Rivers and New England regions.

The top two athletes in each age from Regionals got the opportunity to progress to State Championships.

Meanwhile, Caitlin Evans recently competed at the Little Athletics State Combined Event Championships that were held in Glendale. The combined event is similar to a decathlon but with seven events over two days including the 100-metre hurdles, 200 metres, 800 metres, shot put, high jump, long jump and javelin. Caitlin finished 11th in the state, narrowly missing a top-ten finish.

Narrabri Little Athletics’ 2024 winter season will commence in May.
