Art Unlimited marked a triumphant opening night last Friday at Dunedoo, with nearly 400 entries and a significant turnout of art enthusiasts and guests, making the event an undeniable success.
Among the highlights was the awarding of the prestigious ABC Western Plains prize which is awarded to the artwork which best depicts regional NSW, and this year it was awarded to Deb Michell-Smith for her striking painting titled ‘On The Plains Where The Bustards Roam’.
“The artist has depicted a scene which is instantly recognisable as quintessentially Australian,” judge, Lizzy Galloway, curator at the Mudgee Art Precinct said.
“The strong shadows serve to anchor the birds in the foreground, with the tree-line and shaded cow in the middle, vanishing towards the line of mountains and indigo blue sky very typical in the Central Western region.
“I particularly like the use of patterns to convey crops,” she said.
“Overall, a highly competent landscape.”
The ABC Western Plains prize is one of the many distinguished awards presented at the event, highlighting outstanding achievements in various artistic disciplines.
Mrs Michell-Smith’s victory adds to the list of notable successes for artists from western NSW this year, reinforcing the region’s reputation as a hub for creativity and artistic excellence.
