Garden Club to host NSW Florist Art Association weekend of competition and workshops

Garden Club members held its June meeting at the Narrabri Aquatic Centre meeting room.

The delicious coffees and cakes available at the kiosk warmed up us on a very cool morning.

Guest speaker Helen Dugdale gave a talk about her very interesting and diverse career, initially in various agricultural research and advisory roles, and then her active involvement in the Trees for Life Program while living in South Australia.

Helen moved to Narrabri to take up a three year work placement in soil and water research management, and still calls Narrabri home 28 years later.

Her passion for working with young people has seen her instrumental in the launch of the Narrabri Youth Centre, and in 2001, the Narrabri Education Foundation which has helped many young local people further their education over the years.

Not happy to sit on her laurels, Helen has continued to study, conducts Brain Coaching clinics, has written a book on insomnia, and is planning another, among other pursuits.

She is certainly a very energetic and inspiring lady. Thank you, Helen.

Winners of our monthly Bloom competition were Jenni Hayne, Kath Vinson and Joan Melbourne.

Good job ladies. Coming up with flowers in the garden in the middle of June is no easy feat.

We are currently preparing to host the New South Wales Floral Art Association for a weekend of competition, demonstrations and workshops.

This is the third time we have had the honour of hosting this event which will be held in August.

It is always exciting, and at the same time somewhat daunting, to compete with these incredibly talented floral artists, many of whom travel to national and international events. They are always happy to come to Narrabri and share their expertise with us.

The show will be open to the public, so come along and see some amazing modern floral art.

Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 10 at the Craft Shop Gallery, (see classifieds) commencing at 10am.

We are pleased to have local identity, Kath Hamilton, agree to come and speak to us this month.

Kath, among her many talents, is a passionate wild life conservationist.

Her amazing garden is the ideal habitat for the many animals Kath takes care of.

We are looking forward to hearing her story.

The meeting will be followed by our annual soup luncheon.

This year’s lunch is a fundraiser for cancer research.
