Tony Redman is the Narrabri Bowling Club’s consistency singles champion for season 2024/25 after he scored a 34-point victory over the defending champion David Dewar on Saturday.
Redman outscored Dewar 150-116 across 27 ends at the John McNamara Owen Campey Green, the same venue that Dewar had beaten Redman 25 shots to 18 in the major singles final six weeks earlier.
The two bowlers had also contested the most recent consistency singles final back in July 2023 when Dewar won 150-134 to be crowned champ for the third time in four years.
However, Redman prevailed in the latest chapter of their friendly rivalry as he got the job done on Saturday and became the consistency singles champion for the second time after he had secured his maiden title in 2018 with a victory over Trinity Kelly.
Redman scored a 6-4 on the first end to establish a two-point lead and he stayed in front for the entire contest before finishing off the match on the 27th end. He and Dewar split the second and third ends before Redman won the fourth 7-3 and the fifth 6-4 to go ahead 29-21.
Dewar won his first end on the sixth with a 6-4, but he was not able to earn another until the 10th when an 8-2 cut Redman’s lead to 58-42.
Redman then claimed four of the next five ends to go ahead 86-64 after 15 ends of play, with the 22-point lead being his largest of the game up until that point.
However, after the two men split the next two ends, Dewar scored the first 9-1 of the contest to reduce his deficit to 14. That then became 12 after the 20th end when Dewar scored a 6-4 to make the score 106-94.
The match was either players’ to win at that stage of the game but Redman wrestled back momentum when he won the next four ends a combined 32 points to eight to establish a 40-point lead as he went in front 138-98 in the first-to-150 match.
Dewar registered back-to-back 7-3s on the 25th and 26th ends, but it was too little, too late as a 6-4 to Redman on the 27th brought the match to a close as he prevailed 150-116.
Narrabri Bowling Club also hosted 22 bowlers at last Thursday night’s social bowls night. There were three triples matches and one pairs game played.
Keith Stoltenberg, Peter Small and Bruce Tomlinson beat Steve Daskey, Di Chessells and Rhonda Fitzgerald 22-8; Janice Foxe, Carol Armstrong and Cindy Neil downed Eva Sadler, Dee Fletcher and Ian Schweitzer 15-13; Dawn Armstrong and David Briggs edged out Ben Guest and Lyn Tuckey 15-14; and Lisa Pillar, Ronnie Dewar and Berice Eather defeated Jason Montgomery, Tony Redman and Colin Armstrong 14-10.
The club will host social bowls again tonight, and the 2024/25 men’s season has now turned its attention to the club pairs competition, which will get underway on Saturday.
