Narrabri brothers Joey and Jonty Fowler teamed up for the first time since 2017 on Saturday when they lined up for NSW Waratahs’ under-20s side.
In their first trial match of the year, the Waratahs’ academy players took on a NSW Pasifica select team at Eric Tweedale Stadium in Granville and won 109-5.
It was a tryfest in the Sydney suburb as the Waratahs ran in 17 tries and only conceded one.
The Fowler brothers both played at flyhalf, with Joey starting the game and Jonty finishing it, and the duo combined to kick 12 of 17 conversion attempts.
Joey starred throughout the contest as the 19-year-old scored two tries and also kicked seven conversions from his 10 attempts. He was replaced by Jonty during the second stanza and the 17-year-old also excelled, slotting five of his seven conversion attempts.
The match was the first that Joey and Jonty had played on the same team since they won the Cauliflower Cup in Scone for the Narrabri Blue Boars back in 2017.
Their father and Blue Boars club legend Chris Fowler told The Courier that he and his wife Amanda were proud of their two sons and said that it was a special feeling to watch them play on the same Waratahs team.
Joey then backed up to play 15 minutes for the Waratahs’ men’s side in their 73-5 win over NSW Pasifica later in the day after the Waratahs’ women’s team, which includes Narrabri’s Martha Harvey, had prevailed 98-0. The Narrabri boy kicked two goals in the 68-point win.
Season 2025 is another promising one for the Fowler brothers, who are both eyeing success at club, state and international level.
Joey will play for Sydney Uni again and is expected to feature heavily for their first grade team. He is also eyeing his Super Rugby debut with the Waratahs after training with the first team throughout the pre-season alongside lock Eamon Doyle and scrumhalf Hwi Sharples, who both played for the NSW under-20s on Saturday.
Joey also has his sights firmly set on gaining selection onto the Australian under-20s team that will play at the World Cup in Italy.
Jonty will play for Easts in 2025 and is determined to lock down a spot in the first colts team. He is also hoping to impress for the Waratahs’ under-18s team and is working hard to be selected into the Australian under-18 side for a second consecutive year.
