The First Narrabri West Scouts had the adventure of a lifetime when they attended the recent Jamboree in Queensland.

Held in Maryborough, seven Narrabri Scouts and two leaders joined the almost 10,000 children and volunteers who were in attendance.

For the local organisation, it marked the first Jamboree since COVID and provided 12 days of adventure, learning and friendship.

“It was amazing,” Narrabri Scout Lillian Davies said.

“There were lots of famous people.”

Entertainment included Australian comedian Dave Hughes as well as well-known names including Mitch Tambo, Amy Shark and Sheppard.

“I really enjoyed the mud run,” Lillian said.

“We got absolutely covered in mud.”

Scout leader Megan Davies described the Jamboree as a great experience.

“It taught them a lot of resilience,” Megan said.

She said Jamborees pushed Scouts beyond their comfort zone in a supportive environment, and provided an experience they would not get at home.

Fundraising as well as donations from local business and industry ensured no local Scout missed out on the opportunity for a Queensland adventure.

Veteran leader of the Narrabri scouting group, Tom Kay said

Jamborees were a great learning experience.

“A child can go off to Jamboree quiet and will come back with more confidence,” he said.

The children learn important skills including cleaning, washing and cooking while supported by leaders. These important skills, as well as teaching children resilience, set them up for adulthood.

“Jamboree is the ultimate part of Scouting,” Tom said.
