Narrabri Shire Council has announced the resignation of councillor Amanda Brown, effective Friday, February 27, citing health and family reasons.

Cr Brown, who was serving her first term as an elected representative, has stepped down after recently receiving a cancer diagnosis. In a statement, she said the decision had not been made lightly.

“Whilst it saddens me to have to resign, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on council representing the Narrabri Shire community,” she said. “My cancer diagnosis means a long journey ahead and I feel that I would not be able to give 100 per cent to the role as councillor.

“I thank all councillors, staff and community members for their support and wish the incoming elected representative all the best.”

Mayor Darrell Tiemens acknowledged Cr Brown’s contribution during her time on council, praising her commitment and dedication to the community.

“Councillor Brown has demonstrated genuine commitment to our community throughout her time on council,” he said.

“She has approached the role with dedication and care, and her contribution to council discussions and decision-making has been valued by her fellow councillors and staff alike.

“On behalf of council, I thank Amanda for her service and wish her and her family all the very best.”

Under the Local Government Act 1993, a casual vacancy can be filled by a countback of votes from the previous ordinary election if it occurs within the first 18 months of that election and the council has resolved to use that method. Council confirmed that both conditions apply in this case.

A countback election was also held last year following the resignation of Cr Joshua Roberts-Garnsey, with Ryan Whillas elected as a councillor.

The matter has been referred to the New South Wales Electoral Commission, which will appoint a returning officer to conduct the countback process. Once completed, the commission and council will announce the newly appointed councillor to the community.
