Narrabri Shire libraries and schools will take a deep dive into science and conservation this March as part of the Bilbies in the Pilliga program, delivered in partnership with the Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC).

Julie Olivier, a representative from AWC, will present a series of engaging and educational sessions focused on efforts to reintroduce threatened species into the Pilliga and the science behind restoring healthy ecosystems.

The program will visit:

• Narrabri Library – Young Einstein’s Science Club – Monday, March 9 at 3.30pm

• Pilliga Public School – Library STEM Outreach Program – Wednesday, March 11 at 2pm.

Participants will learn about the critical role biodiversity plays in maintaining healthy ecosystems, the scientific and logistical challenges of rewilding projects, and the significant impact invasive species have on native wildlife populations. The sessions will also explore innovative conservation technologies and the importance of community involvement in protecting vulnerable species such as the iconic bilby.

Narrabri Shire mayor Darrell Tiemens said the program highlights the importance of connecting young people with real-world science happening in their own backyard.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our young people to learn about the important work taking place in the Pilliga and to better understand the role we all play in protecting our unique flora and fauna,” Cr Tiemens said.

“Programs like this not only build knowledge but also inspire the next generation.”

Libraries coordinator Naomi Radford said the sessions align strongly with the library’s commitment to delivering engaging STEM programming across the shire.

“Our Young Einstein’s Science Club and outreach initiatives are designed to spark curiosity and make science accessible and exciting,” Ms Radford said.

“Having an expert from the Australian Wildlife Conservancy share firsthand insights into threatened species reintroduction and ecosystem restoration will be a valuable experience for our participants.”

Cr Tiemens said the libraries are such a great resource for community members.

“I encourage all residents to take advantage of the wonderful resources and programs we have available at our libraries across the shire,” he said.

Community members are encouraged to attend the free sessions. For more information, contact Narrabri Shire Libraries.
