Bernadette Morgan (nee Onus) is excited to do her bit for the Cancer Council in the coming Stars of Narrabri competition.

“My biggest motivator for getting involved are my family and friends who have fought and won the battle, as well as those who we have sadly lost to – or are still fighting – cancer,” she said.

“My grandmother, Marie Onus, has survived breast cancer twice, she’s nothing short of a superstar.”

As one of the founders of the Moree Breast Cancer Support Group, and a driving force behind the chemotherapy unit at the Moree Hospital, Bernadette’s grandmother has been an inspiration in her journey to support those affected by cancer.

“As children, my siblings and I used to parade Grannie’s wigs when we stayed out at her farm – it wasn’t until I grew up that I realised why Grannie had little hair and wore those pretty wigs,” she said.

“It was a clear indicator to me of how special time really is spent with our loved ones who go through the fight with cancer.”

Bernadette will be partnered by Kim Campbell, who she says has been “beautiful and patient” throughout their numerous dance rehearsals.

They have plenty of support for the event, with Bernadette saying “my biggest sponsors have been my family and friends, along with the help of our local Lions Club.”

Bernadette says she doesn’t want to give too much away about her dance routine, calling it “a surprise”.

She describes the duo’s style as “a bit hip and a bit hop, with a touch of jazz hands”.

“It’s definitely not the usual dance moves I bust out on a Friday night,” she admitted.

Bernadette says combining these new moves with a quick tempo has thrown out a few challenges, but she’s been excited to take them on.
