Narrabri High School students have been announced as finalists in the University of New England Acquisitive Art Prize ‘Let’s Hang It’ 2021 competition.

Art students, Jacky Ham (Year 8) and Ebonie Bruce (Year 10), were thrilled to hear the news, they were both finalists in the competition.

The Narrabri High School students were amongst a group of 60 finalists in the 2021 University of New England School acquisitive art prize.

There were 471 art entries this year and these works demonstrated the application of a very high standard of technical skill as well as creative expression.

The selection committee commented that there was a wonderful diversity of art media and subject matter represented.

Ebonie’s work titled, ‘Neapolitan River’, pencil, acrylic and pen – was chosen as one of the finalists in the senior secondary of the competition.

In term one, Year 10 learnt about surrealism.

Their assessment task was to appropriate an existing artwork Ebonie chose Palm Valley (c1940) by Albert Namatjira and add surrealist imagery to create a new artwork.

The students needed to come up with a concept that would work with their chosen artwork.

Ebonie replaced the creek in the original artwork with a melting ice-cream and she added the levitating cherries in the sky – very surreal.

Jacky’s collage and watercolour artwork entitled ‘Grey’ was chosen as a finalist in the junior secondary category of the competition.

Year 8 have been working on a unit of work entitled ‘Portrait Collage, Self-reflection’.

Jacky explored different art techniques such as layering of watercolour to create different tones and paper collage to create her own unique art style.

The exhibition starts end of July.
