A fitting and beautiful service was held for the late Paul Webber in Wee Waa’s Rose Street gardens last Friday.

Paul and his wife Gwen maintained and cared for the glorious gardens, and many consider the lush sanctuary to be the prettiest place in town.

For Paul, gardening was a labour of love he shared with his wife – and attendees at the service reminisced about the magic his green thumb worked in gardens across the district.

Paul was remembered as a true gentleman, always up for a friendly chat and a great contributor to the community, including through his work with the Lions Club and famous scones at the Men’s Shed.

Memories from Paul’s working life were also shared, from his days of windmill maintenance and driving the bus at Burren Junction.

Paul was the loving husband of Gwen; father of Kim (partner Steve), Melissa (partner Andrew) and Adrian (partner Joanna); grandfather of Rachael, Caitlin, Jeremy, Ryan, Jake, Alex and Remy; great grandfather of Kodi, Tyler and Emmerson.

Dennis Lowder read a moving eulogy at the House on Rose service and Paul’s son Adrian read the poem – The Old Man and His Little Dog to reflect Paul’s unbreakable bond with his beloved pet dog named Buddy, who attended the service.

The Old Man and His Little Dog

At first light, day in day out

His little dog is ready

Ready for his cuddles

Ready for a rub on the tummy

Ready to eat his breakfast

Ready to spend another day with his Dad

All day, whatever the day looked like

The little dog kept a sharp eye

A sharp eye on Dad’s movements

A sharp eye on the next snack

A sharp ear on the gate

Is it Peter, is it Dennis, or Ron who’s come to the gate

In the afternoon, he watches every move

Waiting for the signs

Is it time for his walk soon?

Is dad getting the lead?

Is he putting his boots on?

Is it time to go?

Every walk is new

Another chance for his dad to meet someone in the street

Another friendly chat between Dad and a mate

Another opportunity for Dad to have a yarn about a garden somewhere that needs some work

Another chance for him and dad to walk together

Just him and his master. His best pal

With his white cane and his friendly smile

His Dad always made time for this little dog and for anyone around town

Together, they were Paul, and Buddy

The old man and his little dog.
