Popular Wee Waarian Betty Currey recently celebrated a special birthday and her friends shared these lovely words with the Wee Waa News:

Well-known and much-loved Wee Waa resident Betty Currey celebrated her 80th birthday on Thursday, February 23, with a luncheon at The Imperial Hotel attended by about 20 well-wishers.

Betty also celebrated the day previously at a morning tea with Anglican Church friends.

You might say it was a week of festivities for Betty to mark the special occasion, as she was also looking forward to a family party the following Saturday as well.

Following a very enjoyable luncheon Betty cut her lovely cake which featured pink and white roses, entwined with pearls, a fitting tribute to avid gardener and champion rose grower Betty.

Betty has been very active in the Wee Waa community for many years.

Her love and support of the Anglican Church is very evident in her day to day life, and organisations which have benefited from Betty’s patronage are Meals on Wheels, Garden Club, Cancer Support Group, and the Hospital Auxiliary to name a few.

For many years she printed and distributed the Student Echo Newsletter, a mammoth undertaking which was mostly voluntary, prior to the current Wee Waa News inception.

Betty and her great friend the late Gladys Burke were professional caterers for many years, and they travelled big distances to cater for special events, always joking and laughing their way through stressful situations.

That really is one of Betty’s best qualities – she has a great sense of humour, and although she has experienced some health problems in recent years, she still has that twinkle in her eye, and sees the funny side of challenging circumstances.

Happy birthday Betty, enjoy the celebrations.

They are richly deserved, and the Wee Waa community join together to wish you many happy returns, and much health and happiness in the years to come.

Betty made a short speech in which she said how she valued her friends and how she loved Wee Waa, and had no plans to leave the community even though all her children lived elsewhere.

She thanked everyone for coming and celebrating with her.
