Narrabri Shire Council was awarded top honours at the NSW Local Government Excellence Awards, taking out the Supporting Local Enterprise category with its CBD Revitalisation Project.

The awards, which were held in Sydney, celebrate and highlight outstanding achievements by NSW councils and highlight the work being undertaken across the state.

Narrabri Shire Council general manager Rob Williams said council was delighted to win the award.

“What an absolute pleasure it is to spend time with our very talented staff nominated for the numerous awards. It is so rewarding to see them acknowledged on such a big stage and especially humbling to take out the one we did,” said Mr Williams.

“It is never easy when competing for acknowledgement against major city councils with all their resources.”

The three-year Narrabri CBD Revitalisation Project was initiated in response to COVID-19 and prolonged periods of drought to revive the local economy, enhance the CBD’s appeal and foster community engagement.

It included infrastructure upgrades, establishment of events, business workshops, and programs including NarraBRIGHT, Christmas Activations and the Shop Local Gift Card Scheme.
In addition to winning the Supporting Local Enterprise category, council was a finalist in several categories.

Small business liaison officer Gillian Goddard and manager regulatory compliance Landon Brady were both named as finalists in the highly competitive Emerging Leader category.

Council was also a finalist in Community Partnerships (population under 150,000) for the development of the Community Financial Assistance Grant (CFAG) Program; in Borderless Communities for the multi-agency task response to Frogbit infestation in North West NSW; and in the Special Project Initiative (population under 150,000) for the WaterRIDE: Community-facing online flood portal.
