The Namoi River is carrying almost half a tonne fewer carp today after the weekend’s successful Carp Muster.
Fishermen and women of all ages, but mostly kids, pulled the carp out of the water in the annual event which aims to help reduce the number of feral fish in our waterways.
After the weigh in came the presentation of prizes for the biggest carp – caught by Fletcher Williams – and the smallest caught by Emily Simpson.
Narrabri Amateur Fishing Club organised the two day Muster.
“There were 446 entrants in the Muster and 208 caught a fish” club president Jamie Charlton told the audience at the prize presentations.
“There were 356 carp caught weighing a total of 470.89kg.”
There were some big fish caught – the average weight was 1.32 kg – and some very small carp brought to the bank. There is no size or bag limit for carp, which cause considerable damage to waterways and native species.
The weekend’s Carp Muster was the 12th, representing many tonnes of fish.
