As winter ends, the St Stephen’s Presbyterian Church Narrabri usually welcomes spring with its annual Spring Fair and Flower Show.

Unfortunately this year, a tradition that has continued for over 100 years, will change.

The church realised that with the COVID-19 restrictions, the popular flower show luncheon would not be possible and social distancing would be difficult, so the Spring Fair and Flower Show had to be cancelled.

This was particularly heartbreaking given the amount of flowers gracing the town with the recent rains.

To overcome this disappointment, the church has decided to maintain the spirit of the flower show by having a presence at the Narrabri Markets on October 3.

They have called it the “Presbyterian Flower Show Plan B”.

Sadly, none of the homemade foods will be available, but people will be able to obtain plants and homemade crafts at the stand.

The stand also will be proudly adorned with floral displays created by residents of Jessie Hunt Whiddon.

This enables the Flower Show Plan B to maintain some of the community links normally associated with the Spring Fair and Flower Show.

“Although it won’t be the same, we hope our Flower Show Plan B will remind people of our usual flower show, and that they find something of interest at our stall,” said Mary Whitehouse, one of the organisers.

“If it is successful, we may even have another stall in December.”

Given the enthusiasm the “Plan B” has generated amongst the congregation, a second stall seems highly likely.

The “Presbyterian Flower Show Plan B” will be at the Narrabri Markets on October 3, 2020.
