A gathering of enthusiastic walkers will take to the streets of Narrabri this Sunday to raise money for those affected by cancer.

Dubbed the Nine Bridges of Narrabri – a take on the famous seven bridges walk in Sydney – the event will  cover 28 kilometres and cover the neighbouring bridges around the township.

As part of the Cancer Council’s seven bridges challenge going virtual this year, thousands of people across NSW will complete the 28km walk within their neighbourhood this weekend, all with the aim of tackling cancer.

Around 47,000 people are expected to be diagnosed with cancer this year and the funds will go directly to research, advocacy, prevention and support.

A few Narrabri locals have jumped onto the initiative with event organiser Helen Dugdale looking forward to the family friendly event this weekend.

“Everyone knows someone affected by cancer,” Mrs Dugdale said.

“The walk is not a competition and it’s not official.

“It’s all flat and it will be just one foot in front of the other.

“A bit of discomfort to walk 14 or 28kms is nothing compared to what people going through cancer treatment have to endure.

“Doing a fundraiser with a group of people is fun, as well as doing something for our own fitness, and raise funds for cancer research at the same time.”

Starting at The Crossing Theatre at 6am, the walk is set to take around six hours walking at a pace of five kilometres an hour.

People can also start the walk at 9am and choose to walk the last 14km while numbered pebbles will be there to be collected on each passing bridge.

A sausage sizzle will be held around 1pm after the event back at The Crossing Theatre.

People can donate on the Seven Bridges Walk website, on the Narrabri Bridges fundraiser page.
