Narrabri branch of the Red Cross Foundation marked a milestone 30th birthday for the famous Trauma Teddy Bears with a celebratory lunch at Narrabri RSL on December 2.

Many a child has been the appreciative recipient of a ‘Trauma Teddy’ over the years.

The Trauma Teddies have served as a comfort to children going through difficult or traumatic times since 1990.

As their name suggests, the Trauma Teddies are there to ease trauma.

Through the powerful charity work of Red Cross, the teddy bear has become a symbol of hope and support to children across the world battling illness, arriving as refugees or victims of a natural disaster.

The bears are hand-knitted by approximately 600 volunteer knitters across 75 groups around Australia, including right here in Narrabri.

“They’re made for children going through anything traumatic such as being in hospital or a child starting kindergarten,” Narrabri Red Cross volunteer Kath Davis said.

“They go out to the hospitals at Narrabri and Wee Waa, and the ladies hand-knit them.

“They help spread positivity and it gives the children a companion.

“The Red Cross is a brilliant organisation and does remarkable charity work, such as Trauma Teddies.”
