Narrabri Sporties hosted the Namoi District Women’s Bowling Association’s 2021 Open and Senior Pairs championships on the John McNamara Owen Campey Green at the weekend.

The Open Pairs champions for 2021 are Narrabri Women’s Bowling Club duo Lorraine Scott and Debbie Gleeson who won their division’s
final on Saturday afternoon.

Annie Barclay and Lyn Carney from Lightning Ridge then won the Senior Pairs final on Sunday morning.

Less than two weeks after being crowned the Namoi District Women’s Bowling Association’s Open Singles champion, Scott teamed up with Gleeson for Saturday’s Pairs event.

They were one of four teams which competed in that division, which meant semi-finals were contested on Saturday morning followed by the final that afternoon.

Scott and Gleeson took on Lightning Ridge duo Tracy Coglan and Aileen Williams in the semi-final and scored a 27-4 victory to advance.

The final was an all-Narrabri Shire affair after Wee Waa Bowling Club’s Lisa Pillar and Melissa Allen (who subbed for Kay Dewson) defeated Lightning Ridge’s Heidi Monch and Sheila Nagy 16-10 in the other semi-final.

Scott and Gleeson won the decider 22-13 across 17 ends.

The Wee Waa duo took out the first end to establish a 3 shots to 0 lead.

That was the first and only end the Wee Waa team would enjoy a lead.

Scott and Gleeson scored 4 shots on the second end to go ahead and had established a 13 shots to 3 lead by the 16th end.

Allen and Pillar won the seventh and eighth ends to make the score 13-7, but the Narrabri ladies took out seven of the following nine ends to win the match 22-13.

Six teams entered the Senior Pairs competition which meant that two quarter-final matches were scheduled for Saturday morning, with two teams receiving quarter-final byes ahead of Saturday afternoon semi-finals and the Sunday morning decider.

However, only one of those quarter-finals went ahead.

Narrabri Women’s Bowling Club’s Eva Sadler and Helen Woodward defeated Moree duo Joan Limb and Ida Muuser 31-14 in that game.

In the other quarter-final, Lightning Ridge’s Annie Barclay and Lyn Carney advanced after their Moree opposition forfeited.

Two Narrabri Women’s Bowling club duos received the quarter-final byes. They were the teams of Marie Redman and Rhonda Welchman and Di Chessells and Glennis Godden which both went on to lose their semi-final matches.

Redman and Welchman went down 21-14 against Sadler and Woodward, while Godden and Chessells were defeated 22-17 by Barclay and Carney.

The final between the Narrabri and Lightning Ridge teams came right down to the wire on Sunday morning.

The score was 16-15 to Barclay and Carney with one end to play.

Woodward and Sadler then held two shots and the game with Carney having one bowl left to play. But the Narrabri ladies were denied the win after the Lightning Ridge bowler delivered a perfect bowl to sit next to the two bowls and win the end and the match 17-15.

Narrabri Sporties will host another District tournament this weekend when the lady bowlers team up with male counterparts for the Namoi District’s Mixed Pairs event.
