With the help of the Narrabri Rotary Club, the 2021 Science and Engineering Challenge was a success.

The annual competition, run in collaboration with the University of Newcastle, provides local students with a chance to exercise their STEM understandings with fun and practical experiments.

Despite the cold, the Narrabri Rotary Club braved the weather to provide everyone with a hot lunch on each of the challenge days.

Rotarian Bruce Pyke explained that opportunities like the Science and Engineering Challenge wouldn’t have been possible without the help of the local community.

Rotarians, local volunteers, scientists from the Cotton and Wheat Research Institutes, Narrabri High School student helpers and other major event sponsors including Engineers Australia, CSD, Santos, Whitehaven Coal and ARTC Inland Rail, all played a part.

He thanked the town’s dedicated locals, supporters and the University of Newcastle for a fantastic collaborative effort in bringing it all together.

“Considering we couldn’t run the event last year because of COVID, we were very happy with this year’s three-dayer,” Mr Pyke said.

“Our generous sponsors are greatly appreciated and the university did a great job running the challenge.”

Mr Pyke also praised the schools involved for their pleasing participation numbers.

“We had a great turnout, so all of the students fit nicely on their own school-specific tables in the two Crossing Theatre rooms we used.”

“The kids seemed to have a great time, trying out fun and new experiments that they might not otherwise have access to.”
