Two big events will coincide in Narrabri Shire on Saturday, September 4, for a mini ‘Super Saturday.’

September 4 is the date of the COVID delayed NSW local government elections and also the date of the biggest annual fixture on the Narrabri business calendar, the Chamber of Commerce Business Awards Dinner, cancelled last year because of the pandemic.

The return of the two events hopefully signal a further return to normalcy.

“September 4 will be a big day,” agreed chamber president Russell Stewart.

The chamber’s awards dinner will be celebrated in a much more optimistic environment than in the drought plagued, pre-COVID years.

And with the Narrabri Shire’s development gathering momentum, residents considering candidature for the coming council elections will be weighing up their decision.

Service as an elected representative is a real commitment to the community, veteran councillors say – a councillor’s role is much more than attendance at monthly meetings.

Councillors are kept busy, but nowadays the mayor’s role in local councils is effectively a full time job, with a daily workload and obligations reaching into weekends and evenings.

Narrabri Shire councillors were recently granted ‘pay’ rises along with other NSW elected representatives, but the remuneration does not reflect the time demanded in what is still very much a voluntary community role.

The NSW Electoral Commission has an informative website with everything intending candidates need to know. There are a number of options for candidates who want to nominate for the election.

An online nomination system has been developed similar to the system used in the 2019 state election.

The system will allow candidates to submit nominations and pay their required deposit online.

Candidates are encouraged to use this system, the Electoral Commission says.

Candidates who would rather nominate using the traditional nomination form, can do so and submit their completed nomination form and deposit to the returning officer before nominations close.
