As the weather begins to warm and COVID restrictions ease, locals are looking forward to an iconic Aussie summer filled with fun in the sun.

One major celebration many look forward to is the annual Narrabri Shire Australia Day awards, to be held on Wednesday, January 26 next year.

The awards recognise locals across the shire who have accomplished outstanding achievements in the last 12 months, as well as those who have made meaningful contributions to the community across numerous years.

Nominations for the 2022 titles are now open.

Mayor Ron Campbell is encouraging residents to get involved and submit individuals and community groups who deserve recognition for their hard work.

“This is a great opportunity to celebrate the positive contributions many individuals and organisations make to our community, who may not always get the recognition they truly deserve,” he said.

Narrabri Shire Council explained that, while it may seem early to be calling for nominations, they hope the opening date will allow plenty of time for the community to nominate worthy recipients.

This lead up to Australia Day will also gives council time to receive and assess nominations.

Award winners will be determined by councillors at the final ordinary meeting of the year, providing enough time for awards and certificates to be arranged prior to the 2022 ceremony.

The Narrabri Shire Australia Day nomination categories are:

  • Citizen of the year (aged 25 years or older as of January 26, 2022).
  • Young citizen of the year (aged 24 years or younger as of January 26, 2022).
  • Community group service award.
  • Environmental award.
  • Senior sportsperson of the year (aged 25 years or older as of January 26, 2022).
  • Junior sportsperson of the year (aged 24 years or younger as of January 26, 2022).
  • Community arts and cultural development.

The winners will be presented with their accolades at the official awards ceremony next year.
