Three Narrabri High School Year 12 students have been selected to attend the prestigious London International Youth Science Forum.

The event, being held in late July and early August this year at Imperial College London, will see 500 students aged 16 to 21-years-old from almost 70 countries at the youth STEM summer camp.

For Narrabri students Will Faris, Kaitlin Barnes and Maeve Harris, they will be able to hear from a list of distinguished individuals including world leading scientists and Nobel Prize winners.

“To be able to hear from Nobel Prize winners will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Will said.

“It looks like it will be an exciting experience.”

“It will help us to find out more about the science world,” Maeve said.

While in the United Kingdom, the students will also visit Cambridge and Oxford universities as part of the STEM forum. They will also visit war memorials to learn more about global conflicts.

Since being accepted into the London program, the students have embarked on a fundraising quest to assist with the costs associated with attending the international youth STEM event.

Local businesses, organisations and individuals have been quick to support Will, Kaitlin and Maeve in their goal to attend the forum.

“We have been getting a lot of help from a lot of people,” Maeve said.

After completing their Year 12 studies at Narrabri High School, the three students have their sights set on further studies and a career in STEM.

For Will Faris, he hopes to pursue studies in genetic engineering after completing Year 12 this year.

Marine biology has been of interest to Kaitlin Barnes for many years, and she hopes to pursue studies in this field.

Maeve Harris also hopes to stay on the STEM path following Year 12 this year and wants to complete studies in electrical engineering.

The three students spoke glowingly about the support they have received from Narrabri High School.

“The high school has such a great science faculty,” Will said.

To raise funds for the international STEM experience the students will be selling raffle tickets at events including the Rotary Markets.

“We also hope to have a trivia night,” Kaitlin said.

Funds can also be donated online through the students’ Go Fund Me page.
