Jason Anderson wins the top gun at ACT state titles

Champion local pistol shooter Jason Anderson is successfully continuing his journey towards selection on the Australian national team for the 2025 international pistol titles in Finland.

Jason won through at the ACT State Metallic Silhouette Big Bore Titles on the weekend to emerge as the top gun champion and return home with two gold medals.

He was the outright winner in the production category and the outright winner in the international grade unlimited category.

In addition to the two gold medals, Jason placed fourth outright in the revolver category.

These wins add to Jason’s aggregate score, which will ultimately determine selection in the Australian team to go to the world titles in Finland in mid-2025.

His journey towards selection and further building that aggregate score will continue next at Cowra and Mt Lindesay. He will then aim to achieve another positive score when he competes at the Australian Championships, which will be held at his home range at the Narrabri Pistol Club in September.

The Narrabri Pistol Club has been accruing regional, national and international recognition for many years now, and Jason’s successes have been preceded by a steady run of championship-winning Narrabri pistol shooters who have developed their skills here in Narrabri.

Jason was a member of the four-man Australian team that brought home three silver medals in June from the 2024 International Metallic Silhouette Shooting Union World Championships in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

Last weekend’s competition at the Sutton, ACT, shooting complex was a three-day, individual event contested by shooters from around Australia.

The Narrabri shooter’s outright win in the production event saw his name inscribed on the same plaque as his uncle, Tim Anderson, who won the category in 2022.

“I had to shoot a perfect score,” said Jason.

He did that, but fellow competitor Scott Dawson, who was a member of the Australian team with Jason in Hungary in 2022, also shot a perfect score, and that necessitated a shoot-off between the two.

Jason prevailed by one point to be crowned champion.

“It was a tight competition,” Jason said.

The national silhouette titles to be held in Narrabri from September 15 to 21 will be a significant event.

“For the first time, it will see concurrent big bore and rimfire competition,” Jason said.

The staging of a national champs event is a further testament to the status of the Narrabri Pistol Club’s range and facilities.
