A group of local crocheters and knitters, by the name of Creative Craft, have made it their mission to keep Narrabri’s elderly warm this winter.

The collective’s co-ordinator Betty Laird, a former nurse, knows how cold elderly people can get this time of the year.

“Creative Collective decided to make some little blankets to donate to the local Whiddon Groups,” she said.

“Colder weather can cause aches and pains, especially for older people, so these little knee rugs will help alleviate that problem by keeping them warm.”

On Tuesday, June 8, Carol Connole from Whiddon Robert Young, met up with the Creative Collective ladies to receive the generous donation.

Three of the new rugs were given to Whiddon Wee Waa, three went to Whiddon Jessie Hunt, and the remainder of the blankets were donated to Whiddon Robert Young.

The blankets will not only warm up the Whiddon residents, but the colourful designs will make for fun additions to the home.

“We call them rainbow rugs, because of the bright colours,” Mrs Laird said.

“And, to make sure the residents can get a lot of shared use out of them, we’ve crafted the rugs out of yarn not wool which makes them machine-washable.”

This project has been no small feat, the group has been hard at work creating the blankets since late last year.

“We started crafting them a week before Christmas in 2020 – in that time, our small group has crafted 16 new rugs from scratch,” Mrs Laird explained.

“We wanted a project that would allow us to give back to the local community, so our dedicated team met twice a week to work on these gifts for Whiddon.”

Creative Collective will continue meeting on Tuesdays and Fridays, from 10am at the Narrabri Old Gaol and Museum, any locals interested in joining the group to pursue crafty interests including patchwork, knitting and crocheting are welcome.
