Narrabri Rugby League Football Club’s reserve grade side scored its first win of the season on Sunday when it downed the Boggabri Kangaroos 36-16 in the sides’ round three Group 4 Rugby League match.

Seven different try-scorers crossed for the home team’s seven four-pointers which included Will Tifui, Toby Bentley, Toby Howarth, Rodney Lamb, Jayden Hayne, Cameron Yates and Kaleb Mowle, while Mowle and Lamb also combined for eight extra points with two conversions each.

Captain-coach Lachlann Thorn was pleased as his side earned its first two competition points of the season following two close losses to open the campaign.

Thorn’s men crossed for the first try of the match in the third minute of the contest through Hayne who ran onto a Bentley offload close to the line and crashed over for the first try of the match which Lamb converted to make the score 6-0.

Bentley and Hayne combined again 10 minutes later but the roles were reversed as Hayne offloaded to Bentley who scored the side’s second as the Blues established a 10-0 lead.

The Roos reduced the deficit in the 17th minute when Jarrad Adams went over for a try down the left edge to make the score 10-4, which became 10-all with seven minutes left to play in the first half when Jayde Campbell converted a Josh Matthews try.

The Blues played the final 10 minutes of the first half with 12 players after Wade Mallinson was sin-binned, but the hosts went into the break with a 14-10 lead after Lamb dived over following a quick dart out of dummy half close to the line with less than a minute left to play in the half.

Narrabri threatened to extend its lead five minutes after play restarted when Bentley made a line break on his own 30-metre line and charged 50 metres upfield before passing to halves partner Jed Smith. Smith was eventually tackled 10 out from the line which resulted in Rodney Orcher being sin-binned for a professional foul.

The Blues capitalised on the numbers advantage with two quick back-to-back tries when Yates and Mowle crossed the line, both of which were converted as the Blues established a 26-10 lead.

That lead became 10 points with 18 minutes left to play when Boggabri’s Darren Certoma claimed his team’s third try of the game which Campbell converted.

Any hopes of a Boggabri comeback were dashed in the 60th minute of the 70-minute match when the hosts forced a mistake deep inside their attacking half then capitalised with a Howarth try which Mowle converted. That made the score 32-16 before Tufui crossed for the final try of the game with three minutes left to play to make the final score 36-16.

Blues front-rower Howarth received the three Group 4 best and fairest points following a dominant performance, while Boggabri’s Pat Hoppe earned two and one went to Howarth’s forward partner Rylee Sadler.
